Meet the American Chemical Society

As the world’s largest scientific society and a leading source of scientific information, the non-profit American Chemical Society (ACS) is committed to “improving all people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.”

The organization supports and promotes the work of chemists, chemical engineers, and other scientists. Based in Washington, DC, the nearly 150-year-old society publishes scientific journals, hosts major research conferences, awards grants, and provides career, educational, and advocacy programs. ACS serves more than 200,000 members in over 140 countries.

THE CHALLENGE

Overcrowding and confusion at peak commute times

The ACS office in Washington, DC, was designed with the traditional office model in mind. But with fewer people physically coming to the office after the pandemic, senior leadership decided to transition to a hybrid work model.

ACS decided to shift away from the traditional office model to hoteling so employees could book workspaces as they needed them. However, their existing tools weren’t quite up to the task, and some employees were unsure about the change.

THE SOLUTION

Digital signage that delivers real-time updates

ACS leadership determined that for their hybrid work environment to succeed, they had to make sure people could easily find a suitable workspace when going into the office. To achieve this, senior management and the facilities team realized they needed better tools.

ACS needed a workplace platform that could handle space reservations, improve collaboration, and make the best use of working spaces.

The facilities team started by researching workplace experience platforms. After looking closely at providers, it became clear that Appspace was the best fit. Its tight integration with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and WebEx – tools they were already using – was a major plus.

Initially, ACS was only focused on space reservation tools to address their need for hoteling. But as they learned more about Appspace, they expanded the scope, adding digital signage, employee comms, and wayfinding solutions to the mix. This would give them a complete solution to support their evolving workplace.
