Corporate communications is the strategic management of how an organization communicates with everyone who has a stake in it – employees, customers, investors, media, and the public – to build a consistent, trusted brand story.
Strip away the jargon, and corporate communications is just this: it’s how a company talks and makes sure it’s talking consistently to everyone. It’s a form of strategic communications, meaning every message is planned with a specific goal in mind.
Think about it from the outside. A journalist reads your press release. Investors read your quarterly report. Your customers see your Instagram posts. A new hire reads your onboarding email. They’re all forming an opinion of your company at the same time. If those messages contradict each other, people notice and trust is the first thing to go.
Corporate communications is the function (and often the team) that stops that from happening. It sits above the individual channels – PR, marketing, HR comms, investor relations – and makes sure the brand voice, the facts, and the timing all line up, whether the message is going to a shareholder or a shift worker.
It’s easy to confuse this with workplace communications, but they’re not the same thing – more on that distinction below.
According to Appspace's 2026 workplace experience trends & insights report, when employees are consistently kept in the know, 91% are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work, as well as feel more aligned with their organization's goals. Communication is one of the biggest levers organizations have to move that number.
Corporate communications is the organization-wide strategy; workplace communications is the day-to-day exchange between colleagues that happens inside it.
These terms get used interchangeably, but they’re not the same scope. Corporate communications covers both internal and external audiences: press, investors, customers, and employees alike. Workplace communications is specifically about the everyday exchange of information within the workplace – between colleagues, teams, and managers, day to day. Workplace comms is really one piece of the internal side of corporate communications.
Employee communications is the internal-only slice of corporate communications; corporate communications also covers everything external.
Employee communications keeps the workforce informed, engaged, and connected to the company’s goals and direction. It also plays a growing role in attracting talent, since how a company treats and informs its current employees shapes its reputation as an employer. Corporate communications includes employee comms, but also covers everything aimed outward – press, investors, and customers.
Marketing communication sells a product or service; corporate communications builds trust in the organization as a whole.
Marketing communication is built to drive demand and sell – think campaigns, ads, and product messaging aimed at moving someone toward a purchase. Corporate communications is broader and less transactional: it’s about shaping overall perception and trust in the organization – from the inside and out. Marketing comms is one channel corporate communications relies on, but it isn’t the whole strategy.
Great communication shouldn’t depend on which app someone happens to check that day. Appspace connects the intranet, employee app, and digital signage into one simple, secure platform – so your team can spend less time managing systems and more time making sure everyone hears the same story.
